Have you ever wished you could peer inside the mind of the self-proclaimed "mentors", "godly men/women", who front themselves as stroke of luck before the vulnerable in the third world countries ? Have you thought why the 99.9% of the NGOs in the world today have never achieved their missions and visions as stipulated some dating back to 19th century?

In early 2015, I was a form three student in an ambitious and academic high school located in Nandi County with 1146 meters estimated terrain elevation above sea level. I had explored leadership positions in the school courtesy of my supportive peer group and exclusive democratic environment that supported my ambitions to be a leader someday. I envy sustainable developments because it strengthens both social and economic bond& improve quality of life. Fast-forward, during my higher education studies in the slopes of Mt. Kenya region student life was filled with organized social responsibility activities in the county.

I can recall how we could join university efforts to visit villages affected by jiggers, town clean-up activities and pad-drives courtesy of the office of the then Mr/Miss KeMU and the vocal school of Medicine students. You can actually feel the empathy characterized by energy of those involved in these activities exhibit.

I have today felt I should share my opinion basing on NGOs, CBOs and Non-Profit organizations. At times individuals have raised queries on why 99.9% of these organizations in the world today have almost failed to achieve their mission and vision even though they its inception is nearly sixty years ago. For instance, there are organizations which have had the same goal since independence of a number of countries in Sub-Saharan region without tangible results apart from amassing massive influence on how they remunerate their employees.

Through research and information present in the public domain, you will realize that there is much to challenges these organizations face today. The vocal challenges derived by researchers and keen citizens are the insufficient funds and unpragmatic governance/network. It is factual that the above mentioned challenges can affect the progress of any organizations in a region however, we must know the root course or else there will be a huge number of "activists" who will be overseeing the leadership of the said organizations.

There exist steps the NGOs CBOs and non-profit organization can take to continue moving closer to achieving the goals set.

  • Solve the problem

The leadership of the organization is everything, It must at all times be aware of the problem the organization want to solve be it in health, climate change or at the lower cadre of the society. Today various non-profit organizations have become popular catch ;in our modern day culture. Many people proudly claim to be the founders, chairpersons or team lead of organization X or Y. The question is what is the key reason you are part of an NGO practice, in essence, that should be the guiding principle every quarter.

  • Leveraging the Employee skills

The human capital in various organizations is the heartbeat that keeps it moving, the human resource department must be able to know " what is that a certain employee can do with ease and passion?" When this question ;is answered, then this department should maximize these opportunities to the fullest. The talents should be developed into a sustainable gear towards the goals of the organization.

  • Add value

Another way that will open the next door towards the mission of the organization is to add value. Warren Buffet maintains that ' price is what you pay, value is what you get" NGOs should build an effort of adding value to its team through education and informatics. Optimum care for the people engaged in these activities must be maximized to enhance its growth.

  • Escalate the move to invest more on income generating activities

Invest highly on income generating activities to avoid stoppage of work during projects, a good number of these organizations have embraced this tactic and hence closer to eradicating the issue concerning insufficient funds and affected progress when it comes to funding projects related to to the mission of the NGO. There must be a proper analysis to ensure a positive statement of accounts through a financial process that oversees all the revenues against the expenses and taxes.

  • Commitment to reality

The last tool that can be maximized to assist the organizations today is the commitment to reality. Many leaders, founders and CEOs are more optimistic about possibility of an organization being profitable and sustainable than they should be. Optimism is good and necessary for success but should be tempered with realism. Some goals just cannot be achieved without massive analysis or maximum use of key performance indicators that will clearly delineate success of the organization.

In conclusion these five steps can be used by anyone who has or would like to build a stronger NGO, CBO or a Non-Profit Organization. Remember there is more to what you see. The process is not a walk in the park; you will need funding, support, technical and non-technical support.

It is important that we stand-up and form appropriate organizations to solve 21st century problems and dream big but eventually wake up and do what is necessary to establish, grow and sustain an NGO or other relevant organizations.
