A Year of Discovery in Brisbane, Australia

As I reflect on the past year since my arrival in Brisbane, Australia, where I embarked on a journey to pursue my master's degree, the rich tapestry of experiences has expanded beyond cultural immersion and city exploration. Brisbane, often hailed as Australia's New World City, offers a cultural tapestry that unfolds with every step. The city is a melting pot of diverse influences, evident in its festivals, art scenes, and culinary offerings. From the lively South Bank precinct to the trendy Fortitude Valley, Brisbane effortlessly blends tradition and modernity. Oh! Brisbane is a city in Queensland state which is among the six states in Oz. It is courtesy of the opportunity offered to me by the James Cook University - "This is uni... but not as you know it." Australia's education system, markedly different from my home country of Kenya, has played a pivotal role in shaping my academic journey.

I must say this opportunity came at a time when I am building cornerstones in all areas of my life. I worked towards it a time when an impressive number of young and energetic people from every part of my country were advancing their higher education as international students. There is reasonable and unreasonable expectations all over the societal setting and I have gradually; within the shortest period, comprehend my position in all these circumstances. I will tell you now that going abroad for studies is one of the best things that can ever happen to you at your early twenties, especially if your are going for a masters studies (speaking from my experience).

One of the standout features of the Australian education system is its global perspective. It is fostering an environment that prepares students to thrive in an interconnected and diverse world. The emphasis on international collaboration, innovative teaching, and cultural inclusivity positions Australian graduates as globally competent and ready to contribute to the challenges and opportunities of our interconnected world. It witnessed this during one of my important units on Changing Business Environment, the facilitator was well versed with current and future trends in the business world. Pursuing my master's degree in Brisbane has exposed me to a diverse and inclusive learning environment. The classrooms are filled with students from around the world, fostering a dynamic exchange of ideas and a cross-cultural learning experience. The emphasis on global perspectives has broadened my horizons, providing insights into international practices and methodologies.

Australia is for the sixth-eyed beast, working part-time as an international student in Australia has been a transformative aspect of my educational journey. Beyond the financial support it provides, the experience has offered me massive opportunities for personal and professional growth. Balancing work commitments with academic responsibilities has honed my time management skills and instilled a sense of responsibility. Moreover, the exposure to the Australian work environment (which I hold dear to myself), has significantly enhanced my understanding of workplace dynamics, communication styles, and industry practices. It's not just about earning a paycheck; it's about actively participating in the vibrant culture of the Australian workforce.

The part-time work has not only funded my living expenses but has also opened doors to a network of professionals in all areas such as the health sector, industry and manufacturing. These connections, coupled with the practical skills gained on the job, have added a practical dimension to my academic knowledge. As I transition into the post-graduation phase, I am grateful for the holistic education Australia has provided, seamlessly blending theoretical learning with real-world application through part-time employment.
